Understanding the Impact of Sharing Household Chores on Income
Household chores are often seen as mundane tasks that need to be done to maintain a home. However, recent research suggests that sharing these chores can have a significant impact on household income. A study conducted by Ashish Sedai, an assistant professor in economics at the University of Texas at Arlington, focused on how sharing household responsibilities can lead to income gains, especially for women in patriarchal societies.
Breaking Gender Norms for Financial Independence
In patriarchal societies, women often face challenges in achieving social and financial independence. The research conducted by Sedai found that when married women participated in counseling with their spouses aimed at breaking gender norms, they experienced increased social and financial independence. This intervention led to men in these relationships taking on more household roles, which in turn resulted in better communication and an overall gain in household employment and income.
The goal of the study was to examine how relationship counseling and community-based, couples-oriented activities could impact women’s overall socioeconomic condition. By breaking stringent patriarchal norms and fostering mutual respect and trust among couples, the intervention aimed to reduce household responsibilities for women, thus allowing them to participate more actively in the labor force.

Effects of Counseling and Community-Based Activities
The research involved a randomized control trial with 900 couples in Kanpur, India. One group received counseling sessions on gender equality, stereotypes, discrimination, and trust and cooperation. Another group received the same counseling along with trust-building activities, such as a blindfolded game that required couples to guide each other to a target. The third group served as a control with no interventions.
The results showed that women who received both counseling and community-based activities increased their employment time by 43 minutes, primarily through small-scale self-employment. Men who participated in counseling and couples-based activities also increased the time spent on household chores, with those engaging in trust activities spending even more time on domestic responsibilities. This highlighted the importance of “learning by doing” in improving women’s labor force participation.
Benefits of Quality Time and Communication
While counseling played a crucial role in the research, Sedai found that couples spending quality time together and engaging in activities further strengthened their households. Not only did household income increase, but domestic violence also decreased among the participating couples. Sedai emphasized the importance of respect and communication in improving women’s labor force participation in patriarchal contexts.
The study conducted in India serves as a valuable lesson for couples worldwide. By emphasizing respect, cooperation, and communication, couples can enhance trust and eventually boost women’s involvement in the labor force. The findings underscore the significance of sharing household responsibilities not only for financial gains but also for strengthening relationships and fostering a more equitable division of labor within the household.
