The composition of gut microbiota, the community of microorganisms residing in our digestive tracts, has been found to have a significant impact on our decision-making processes, particularly in social settings. Research conducted by Hilke Plassmann and her team from the Paris Brain Institute and the University of Bonn has shed light on how changes in gut microbiota can influence our sensitivity to fairness and how we interact with others. These findings, published in the journal PNAS Nexus, highlight the crucial role that our intestinal microbiota plays in various aspects of our health and behavior beyond just digestion.

Understanding the Gut-Brain Connection

The gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication system between the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract, is increasingly being recognized for its role in influencing our behavior and decision-making processes. Recent studies have shown that the gut microbiota can communicate with the brain through various pathways, including the vagus nerve and the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. This communication between the gut and the brain can impact cognitive functions, stress levels, and even social behaviors.

Experimental Findings on Decision-Making

To investigate the influence of gut microbiota on decision-making in a social context, researchers conducted behavioral tests, including the “ultimatum game,” where participants had to make decisions based on fairness. In a study involving 101 participants, some were given dietary supplements containing probiotics and prebiotics, while others received a placebo. The results showed that the group receiving the supplements exhibited a greater inclination to reject unfair offers, indicating a higher sensitivity to fairness. This behavioral change was also accompanied by biological changes, such as alterations in the composition of gut microbiota and levels of dopamine precursors.
