In today’s digital age, where information spreads rapidly through social media platforms, the issue of misinformation and disinformation has become a significant concern. Recent research has shed light on the importance of generative AI policies in media organizations to effectively navigate the challenges posed by emerging technologies. Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that can create new content, such as images or text, based on patterns learned from existing data. A study conducted by RMIT University, in collaboration with Washington State University and the QUT Digital Media Research Centre, delved into the perceptions and policies surrounding generative AI in visual journalism.

The Impact of Generative AI on Misinformation and Disinformation

The study revealed that only over a third of the media organizations surveyed had specific policies in place regarding the use of generative AI for images. Photo editors and media professionals expressed concerns about the potential for generative AI to contribute to misinformation and disinformation. One key issue highlighted was the challenge of maintaining transparency with audiences when using generative AI technologies. The rapid dissemination of content on social media platforms, coupled with algorithmic biases, further complicated the situation, as media organizations often have limited control over how their content is perceived and shared.

Lead researcher Dr. TJ Thomson emphasized the importance of transparency in disclosing the use of generative AI technologies to audiences. He cited an example where an AI-generated image of the Pope wearing Balenciaga went viral, causing confusion among viewers who mistook the image for a real photograph due to the lack of context. Additionally, the study found that media outlets sometimes unknowingly shared AI-generated images without understanding the extent of editing done, which could impact their credibility.

Addressing Challenges Through Policies and Processes

To mitigate the risks associated with generative AI, the study recommended the implementation of clear policies and processes within media organizations. These policies should outline how generative AI can be utilized in different forms of communication, including images and videos, to prevent incidents of misinformation and disinformation. While some outlets prohibited the use of AI-generated images altogether, others permitted their use under certain conditions, such as when the story pertained to AI itself.

Dr. Thomson emphasized the need for concrete guidelines in AI policies, as vague or abstract policies may not effectively address the complexities of generative AI technologies. Banning generative AI entirely was deemed impractical and could hinder the benefits of using AI for tasks such as metadata enrichment and captioning. The study also highlighted the importance of training data diversity to avoid algorithmic biases that perpetuate stereotypes and lead to reputational risks for media organizations.

Embracing Opportunities and Ensuring Ethical Use

Despite concerns about misinformation, the study found that many photo editors recognized the potential benefits of generative AI in generating ideas and filling gaps in existing content. While there were apprehensions about the impact on traditional photojournalism roles, some editors saw opportunities for AI to streamline certain photography tasks, allowing photographers to focus on more creative projects. However, ethical considerations, such as copyright issues and transparency in sourcing materials, remained critical aspects that media organizations needed to address.

As generative AI continues to evolve and influence the media landscape, the establishment of clear policies and ethical guidelines is crucial to navigate the challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation. By fostering transparency, diversity in training data, and responsible use of AI technologies, media organizations can build trust with their audiences and uphold the integrity of journalism in the digital age.
